You have probably tried to understand your situation on your own. You have gone over it again and again, asked friends, maybe asked a fortune teller. And you still do not know what is really going on.
That is exactly what the Fa is for. Not to predict your future like a horoscope, but to show you what is actually happening, why, and what can be done about it.
What the Fa is
The Fa is the oracle of Vodun, practised in Ouidah, Benin. Among the Yoruba it is called Ifa. It is a complete system of knowledge that covers spirituality, philosophy, traditional medicine and divination, and it speaks through 256 signs.
It is not a recent invention and it is not a folk curiosity. In 2005, UNESCO proclaimed the Ifa divination system, of which the Fa is the Fon form, a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
The Fa was born in the region of the Bight of Benin and has been practised in Ouidah for centuries. Here, in the spiritual capital of Vodun, it is still practised in its fullest form, passed from master to student and within families.
How a reading works
The bokonon, the priest of the Fa, uses sacred instruments to question the invisible forces: the divining chain, sacred palm nuts, and powder spread on the divination tray. The answer comes as one sign among 256, and each sign carries many meanings depending on the question and the person.
That is why a reading is never a generic text. The same sign does not mean the same thing for a woman whose husband has left and for a trader whose shop is empty. The reading depends on the sign, on your situation, and on the experience of the person reading it.
I read the 256 signs and their many combinations. It is the first thing I do for anyone who writes to me, before any work is even discussed.
What the Fa can reveal
- the strengths and weaknesses of your personal destiny
- the spiritual causes behind a problem, in love, health, work or money
- the offerings and the work needed to improve your situation
- the opportunities to take, and the dangers to avoid
Sometimes the reading shows that nothing needs to be done, and that the situation will move on its own. Sometimes it shows a precise obstacle that can be lifted. And sometimes it says clearly that a door is closed. I tell you all three, including the one you did not want to hear.
For a separation, see what the Fa reveals first when a lover has left. For money that never stays, see why I recommend a Fa reading rather than a bedou.
What the Fa is not
It is not fortune telling for entertainment, and it is not a promise. Nobody can guarantee you a result, and anyone who does is lying to you. The Fa gives you clarity: what is really happening, and what your real options are.
A reading does not replace a doctor, a lawyer or your own judgement. It shows you the part of your situation you cannot see from where you stand.
A word on the name. Vodun is often written Voodoo in the West, a spelling that carries a century of distortion. The Fa belongs to Vodun, the living tradition of Ouidah, in Benin.
Master Mietonou, keeper of the Hounon tradition
I am a direct heir of the Hounon family, one of the most respected Fa lineages of Ouidah. People consult me from Europe, the Americas and across Africa, most of them without ever travelling to Benin.
Common questions
Is the Fa the same as Ifa?
Yes. It is the same divination system, with the same 256 signs. Fa is its name among the Fon of Benin, Ifa its name among the Yoruba. The practice in Ouidah is the Fon tradition of the Fa.
Can you do a reading at a distance?
Yes. Most of the people I read for I have never met. The reading is the same whether you are in Ouidah or in London.
What do you need from me?
Your date of birth and an honest account of your situation and your question. The more precise you are, the more precise the reading.
Is the first reading free?
The first Fa consultation is free and commits you to nothing. If work is needed afterwards, the price is stated clearly before anything begins.
What if the Fa gives bad news?
Then I tell you, plainly and without an invoice. Knowing that a door is closed is worth more than paying someone to pretend it is open.
